Douglas was educated at Dulwich College and ordained in 1894 at Newark. He undertook many positions within the Anglican Church and was Rector of St Michael Paternoster Royal, 1933-53. Alongside his ecclesiastic commitments, Douglas also took several senior positions with the University of London and was Chairman of Convocation in 1939.
